Louisville mayor says there is no body cam footage from officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler

According to local Louisville news station WDRB, the officer who confronted and arrested pro golfer Scottie Scheffler did not have a body cam recording the incident.

WDRB’s Twitter account put out the following report Saturday morning, noting that the officer doesn’t appear to have body cam footage of the Friday morning arrest of Scheffler:

“Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg said this morning that LMPD Detective Bryan Gillis either wasn’t wearing a body camera Friday morning or didn’t have it activated when he encountered Scottie Scheffler outside Valhalla,” WDRB tweeted.

They also included this direct quote from Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg: “We have yet to discover footage of the initial contact between Scottie and the officer.”

So, the public still has little to no clue what actually happened between Scheffler and the officer during the incident Friday morning aside from what the two sides have said.

Greenberg also commented on the event Friday and said that the police department was conducting a full investigation of the ordeal.

“It is unfortunate that an incident took place between an LMPD officer and Mr. Scheffler while he was attempting to enter Valhalla,” Greenberg said in a statement. “LMPD is fully investigating this incident and the legal process will proceed. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation.”

Scheffler is currently facing some serious charges. According to Olivia Russell, a Louisville-based reporter for WAVE 3 News, Scheffler’s charges include: “assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.”

Scheffler was initially detained by police after a misunderstanding of traffic flow, per Jeff Darlington of ESPN. Per multiple reports, a “pedestrian-involved fatality” caused a traffic jam near Valhalla. Golfers and caddies were going around the scene in order to get inside the golf club and many did with no issue. Scheffler, however, was stopped, arrested and ultimately booked into jail.

Per Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, Scheffler and the officer had a “miscommunication” which led to the incident. Scheffler released a statement, saying the following:

“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today.

“Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.”
